When I went to the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration in June 2024, I stayed at a Forest Service campground on the banks of Icicle Creek, several miles above the town of Leavenworth. A beautiful campsite, no traffic noise from the road, a forest of mixed cedar and pine... the only fly in the ointment was the endless roar of spring runoff tumbling down the creek bed, surprisingly loud.
As I lay awake listening to the creek, my thoughts drifted back to a story about Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. He spent 3 years in the United States. When he visited Niagara Falls in 1893 he described the thundering water as "a grand symphony in B minor." I pondered, and concluded he was correct, and the sound of the creek was a deep drone in B minor while all the individual high-pitched burbles blended into a big confused swirl of sound.
Sorry, violinists. It's a real shame that Dvorřák picked B minor. Your part could have been so much easier if he had said D minor instead!
